Active and Safe Routes to School

Active and Safe Routes to School (ASRTS) is a comprehensive program that promotes safe, walkable communities. It engages both the school and its community to work together to make safe walking routes a reality for all children.

For many of us, driving our children to school seems like the safest and most convenient option in our busy lives. However, our dependency on motorized transportation is related to a decline in air quality and rising cases of asthma in children.  Many children do not get enough daily activity for normal growth and development.  We have unsupervised and empty neighbourhood sidewalks that are considered unsafe for children and there are problems with traffic congestion around our schools.

We can change this unfortunate trend.  Walking or biking to school is good for health, it keeps the air clean, it is fun and the more people or eyes on the streets the safer it is for everyone.
