School Travel Planning

What is it?
School Travel Planning brings together community stakeholders to identify barriers to active transportation for each school and develop a written action plan. A flexible School Travel Planning framework allows communities to customize their approach to fit local circumstances The ASRTS program in Canada is being taken to a new level with the launch of a School Travel Planning pilot project, taking place between November 2007 and March 2009. With the financial support of the Public Health Agency of Canada, Green Communities Canada is spearheading this initiative that is taking place in four provinces – Nova Scotia, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia.

Waterloo Region is the Ontario pilot site.  We are working with 3 pilot schools; Mary Johnston in Waterloo, W.T.Townshend in Kitchener, and Saginaw in Cambridge. The purpose is to look closely at traffic issues at these three schools and to develop a plan to address the issues.

Stay tuned for updates on this exciting initiative.
