Special Walk to School Days

International Walk to School Day is an annual event held in more than 45 countries around the world.  This year it is Wed. Oct. 7, 2009Click here to get your school to participate and use this as a kick-off for other pro walking events

Winter Walking Day/Crossing Guard Appreciation Day.   Feb. 10, 2010 is the day of this annual event.  The purpose is to assure people that it is possible to walk to school in any weather. We also honour our crossing guards who play an important role in getting our children to school safely. Click here to get your school to participate and use this to promote other pro walking events

Region of Waterloo Walk to School Day, Wed. Apr. 21, 2010. is an annual event tied into “Earth Week”.  It provides and opportunity to focus on how our transportation choices impact our environment.                                   2009 Region of Waterloo Walk to School Day

Thank you to all schools who participated in the 2009 Region of Waterloo Walk to School Day and made it a success! Thank you to all schools that registered for the draw. Congratulations go out to Preston Public School who won the 2009 draw for a $250.00 gift certificate!

Special thanks go out to those schools who hosted local politicians and dignitaries on their 2009 Region of Waterloo Walk to School Day: 

  • St John's Catholic Elementary School hosted City of Kitchener Mayor Carl Zehr. Principal Pam Garbutt, Mayor Zehr and Mrs Swanson met at Swanson's Home Building Centre along with students and staff to walk to school. Students waving balloons and pom-poms, along the route  made for a fun and colourful walk. Follow-up activities at the school afterward included a whole-school dance activity in the gym!
  • Blessed Sacrament Catholic Elementary School hosted City of Kitchener Councillor Kelly Galloway.
  • Empire Public School hosted City of Waterloo Councillor Ian McLean and School Board Trustee Catherine Fife.
  • Sandowne Public School hosted City of Waterloo Councillor Mark Whaley
  • Preston Public School hosted City of Cambridge Councillor Karl Kiefer
  • St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Elementary School hosted City of Cambridge Councillor Pam Wolfe.
  • J.W. Gerth Public School hosted Region of Waterloo Councillor Jean Haalboom
  • Wellesley Public School hosted Township of Wellesley Mayor Ross Kelterborn and Councillor Jim Olender
  • Riverside Public School hosted Township of Woolwich Mayor Bill Strauss
