
Highlights of our Food and Nutrition Policy
Food and Beverage Choices:
- All school cafeterias must adhere to the Eat Smart! School Cafeteria Guidelines.
- At least 70 percent of the food and beverages available in cafeterias and vending machines should be healthier choices.
- Healthier beverage choices (water, 100% fruit juice, low fat milk) should be available in a variety of size options.
- Foods of minimum nutritional value should be offered in the smallest size possible.
- Healthier items on the menu should be displayed where they are easy to see and reach.
- French fried potatoes shall be available a maximum of three days a week with a goal of eliminating them.
Pricing and advertising:
- Healthier choices should be comparably priced with less healthier items.
- Healthier daily specials should be advertised at the entrance of the cafeteria and by daily morning announcements.
- Only the healthier side options should be advertised with the daily specials.
Food Safety:
- Food safety and sanitation procedures must be followed.
Celebrations, Special Events and Meetings:
- Only healthier food choices should be offered.
- Fundraising efforts should reflect healthy eating principles.
The policy applies to food and beverages:
- Available in school cafeterias, vending machines and tuck shops
- Sold for school fundraisers
- Served for classroom celebrations or contest prizes
- Served at school meetings and any school sponsored events
